Earwax Removal at Home or in Aged Care: How It Works

By 30 October 2026No Comments

Yes, we can take earwax out at your home or in an aged care home. We bring everything with us, anywhere in Sydney. It is perfect for older parents, people who wear hearing aids, and anyone who finds it hard to get to a clinic.

Written by Mo Helou, Principal Audiologist (Accredited Audiologist, Audiology Australia). Checked October 2026.

Who a home visit is great for

  1. Older people who find going out tiring.
  2. People living in aged care. We can see a few people in one visit.
  3. People whose hearing aids keep whistling or sound too quiet.
  4. People getting better after an illness or operation.
  5. Busy workplaces that want staff seen on site.

How a home visit works

  1. You book. You, a family member or aged care staff can book. No referral needed.
  2. We look first. We check both ears to make sure it is wax.
  3. We gently take the wax out. We use a tiny, gentle vacuum. No water. Just a few minutes per ear.
  4. We check again. We make sure the ear looks healthy and hearing is better.
  5. We explain everything. To the person, their family, and the staff if needed.

Our honest advice: sometimes it is not wax

Wax is a common reason for bad hearing, but not the only one. If the ears are clear, we will tell you, and suggest a proper hearing test instead. We will not charge you to take out wax that is not there. If we see signs of an infection or anything unusual, we stop and suggest a GP visit. And if someone is upset or cannot sit still safely, we will not push. We will leave some ear drops and come back another day.

Tips for families

  1. If hearing aids suddenly sound quiet, check for wax before you think they are broken.
  2. Do not use cotton buds. They push wax further in.
  3. A few drops of olive oil once a week can keep wax soft, unless a doctor has said not to.
  4. If wax keeps coming back, book a check every 6 to 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

Can you take earwax out at my home?

Yes. We bring our gear to your home, your work or an aged care home anywhere in Sydney. Please do not try to take wax out yourself with cotton buds or vacuum gadgets.

Do you visit nursing homes?

Yes. We visit aged care homes across Sydney. Family or staff can book, and we can see a few people in one visit.

Why do older people get so much earwax?

As we get older, earwax gets drier and harder, so it does not come out on its own as easily. Hearing aids also stop wax from coming out. So lots of older people and hearing aid wearers get blocked ears.

Can earwax stop hearing aids from working?

Yes. Wax can block the hearing aid or the ear. Then the hearing aid sounds quiet, whistles or seems broken. Taking the wax out often fixes it.

Can blocked ears make someone seem confused?

Sometimes. If someone cannot hear well, they may miss what you say, answer the wrong question or go quiet. That can look like confusion. Taking out wax will not fix other problems, but it fixes one simple one.

Is it safe for older people?

Yes. We use microsuction, a tiny gentle vacuum, with no water. It is gentle on thin skin. We always look first. If we see anything that needs a doctor, we stop and tell you.
